William Tuke (24 March 1732 – 1822) was an English businessman, philanthropist and a Quaker.. Following a visit to a local psychiatric institution he saw patients being treated worse than animals. He was instrumental in the development of more humane methods in the custody and care of people with mental disorders, which came to be known as moral treatment. He was a cofounder of The Retreat in York.
